A philosophy of classroom management by Constance McCarty
I believe every child comes to school with exclusive skills,
unique abilities, diverse backgrounds and individual understandings which affect
how they experience school and the procedures of learning. These abilities,
experiences, and skills must all be taken into consideration when planning
lessons and the environment the teacher creates in the classroom.
Students must first believe that school is a safe place they come to be
strengthened as they learn. Learning expectations should challenge students
fairly and be communicated clearly. The effectiveness of the classroom is based
on the teacher’s confidence and professionalism. If the teacher is not confident
in her own teaching and classroom management abilities, her students will not be
confident with her either. If the teacher is not fair and professional the
students will not believe in her. Students should be able to admire, respect,
and relate to a teacher. A teacher should brand a passion for learning and
curiosity for exploration by showing importance and enthusiasm in all lessons. A
teacher should create an environment that inspires creativity while remaining
well-organized.
To minimize confusion, I will make sure my students know what is expected
of them and how to succeed in the class. By being consistent in my expectations,
students will become familiar with them and foster a sense of security in the
classroom. I will provide students
with clear, concise directions visually and vocally.
This will foster a sense of direction to help students focused, creating
fewer behavioral issues and allowing for more on task instruction time.
To discourage students from becoming off task and bored, I will plan all
of my lessons with extra activities for students who complete the assignment
before the target time. I will always have these materials in the same place to
foster independence and reduce the time spent transitioning from one assignment
to the next. This will allow more class time to be used for
learning.
Displaying student’s work will foster self-efficacy as they can see how
they are improving over time. Using tools such as posters assists
student growth and development as it fosters ingenuity from using tools.
Choosing topics that relate to students’ culture of origin, background
knowledge, and interests and acknowledging students’ as contributors by asking
them to explain topics that they are knowledgeable about, or that interest them,
to the class fosters an ownership in their individual learning, as well as pride
in themselves and their culture.
The teacher must have a purpose in everything she chooses to do. This
means having basic goals to achieve in each class. Once the basic goals are
established and understood everyone is on the same page and can work towards the
end results. Purpose sets the atmosphere for a fast teaching pace that
intensifies the student’s participation. Setting this atmosphere is important.
Students must feel safe to be themselves, make mistakes, and grow to be better
people. This preventative measure will deter most discipline problems in the
classroom. The atmosphere and environment have a drastic effect on the behavior
and focus of the students. There
will be times when an issue with an individual student will surface and it is
important to address the problem immediately.
I believe consequences are only effective if they are meaningful to the
student. In order to find an appropriate solution I will ask the student how
they see the problem and why they feel it is occurring. I will ask the student
what they think should happen if the behavior occurs. By allowing the student to
have ownership in the process fosters a sense of responsibility and allows for
self-regulation. Keeping with the responsibility and accountability I would have
the student draw up a contract with the action and agreed consequence as a
reminder.
I believe that by maintaining a well-managed classroom I will foster a
comfortable, safe place where students have the desire to learn.
Following this philosophy should prevent most distracting events and
behavioral issues, which will allow for more quality instructional time and
learning.
