ART 1050- Intro to Photography
Reflection
Trying
to narrow down one thing I will take away from this class is impossible. The best I could do was focus on two things
even though there is much more. The first important lesson I learned from this class
is photographing from all angles and looking for more than one right answer. I
will apply this to my pedagogy of multicultural education. My students are all
unique individuals and I try to celebrate everyone’s differences. This class reminded me
that not only are there specific cultures with in my classroom but there are
also individual differences among each student in that culture. I need to stop
always taking pictures of flowers looking down because it tends to show a lot
of dirt. The other important lesson I am taking away from this class is ground
to figure relationship. This is something I have really struggled with this
semester. I know now that is because I struggle with it in life. I will try to
always remember to only include the things that are important to the picture
and crop out all the power lines, background clutter, and negative noise that
surround me.
Windows
When I
originally started this project I had a whole different idea in mind then what
it turned into. When I was asked to do a photo essay or documentary on
something of interest to me the possibilities where unlimited since I am
interested in a great many things. Of course I could not do many essays so I
had to narrow it down. I did this by reflecting on what I wanted to accomplish in
this class. I know this may not make my instructor happy but when you get down
to it my purpose is simple. I am not expecting to become a professional
photographer and though the technical aspects of photography like F stops and
shutter speeds are important they are not why I took this class. All I wanted
from this class is an outlet that allows me to express myself and take time for
just me in a stressful world. With this in mind I immediately thought of my
favorite artist Friedensreich Regentag Dunkelbunt Hundertwasser, who may be a
painter and an architect but had an amazing view on the world. In his manifesto
he talks about Window Rights. Basically it goes like this; a person who rents
an apartment should have the right to claim anything outside their window with
in arms reach as their own. They should be able to paint whatever they feel
expresses themselves for the world to see. Since I have rented for most of my
life I understand what that would mean to me to have this one spot on display
that shows how different I am from the other tenants that live there. So that
is how I came up with my project of windows.
Like all good ideas, once started realization sets in. The truth is Utah windows are not that interesting. I know this because I spent eight days scouting windows for my project all over town and they all pretty much look the same. After feeling very discouraged and a little nervous I did what I do best, I adapt. Maybe our windows aren’t very expressive but the people who live and work behind them are. My project changed from unique windows to unique things seen in windows. I have taken pictures of people through their windows, reflections in the window, and objects that can be seen in windows. Even though we may not paint our windows to show the world we are different each window still tells a story if you look at it long enough.
I know present to you my picture “Windows are the eyes to the soul!”
